Baptism (or Christening) is the first of the 7 Sacraments of the Church and it is celebrated by the priest, through the invocation of the Holy Trinity and the symbol of holy water. The fruit of Baptism includes forgiveness of original sin and all personal sins and becoming a member of the Church eventually leading to the reception of other sacraments.
Baptisms are arranged following a consultation with the priest and subsequent participation in the infant baptism class is required. Families who present a child for baptism should normally be registered as members of the parish of St. Dominic’s (if not then they should seek the consent of the parish priest where they are resident before a baptism can be arranged here). The Church requires at least one sponsor (Godparent) who must be a practising Catholic. There is usually another godparent, who, if not Catholic, must at least be a baptised Christian and of a different sex to the other godparent.
The sacrament of confession is available s immediately after the weekday Masses and Saturday from 4.30pm to 4.50pm. However, you are of course free to request confession at any time.
Although we are disturbed by death Catholics do not believe it is the end. Through our baptism we hope to follow Christ into the new life of heaven. When someone dies a priest should be notified as soon as possible so that the he may meet with the family of the deceased and begin making arrangements for the funeral.
Couples request marriage after they become sure they love each another and have a desire to begin a family of their own. Marriage is one of the seven Sacraments and through the free exchange of vows spouses create an unbreakable bond with each other for the rest of their lives.
Normally to marry in St. Dominic’s at least one of the parties should live within the parish. We ask for at least 6 months notice of your intention to marry so that we can make the necessary arrangement and spiritual preparation and ensure you can have the date of your choice. Please speak to one of the priests to arrange an appointment.
